How a Diffuser Changes the Physics of Smoke

The science behind a diffuser is straightforward. Without one, the smoke travels down the stem and exits as large, singular bubbles. These large bubbles create a significant amount of vibration and a loud “glug” as they hit the water’s surface.

A diffuser features a series of small holes or slits that break these large bubbles into hundreds of tiny ones.

By increasing the total surface area of the bubbles, the diffuser allows the smoke to pass through the water with much less resistance, resulting in a significantly quieter and smoother inhale.

Improving Filtration and Cooling

While the primary goal for many is noise reduction, a diffuser also enhances the fundamental qualities of the smoke.
