Darkside made its name in 2015 with dark leaf blends built for high heat and bold flavour. What’s less well known is how much of that thinking ended up in the brand’s hardware — bowls, mouth tips and accessories designed around exactly that style of smoking.

Bowls Built for Heavy Heat

If you smoke strong blends, your bowl has to cope with a lot of coal. A thin bowl scorches on one side and stays cool on the other, and you taste the difference within twenty minutes.

Darkside’s clay bowls are dense and heavy-walled, which spreads heat evenly across the pack instead of concentrating it. All of them work with foil or a heat management device, so they slot into whichever setup you already run.

Choosing Between the Bowl Shapes

Four main options, each doing a specific job.

• D-Phunnel — a single raised spire in the centre keeps molasses in the bowl and out of your stem. The default choice for wet, modern blends.
• D-Killer — the same phunnel principle with a larger capacity, made for long sessions and groups.
• D-Classic — glazed, medium capacity, Kaloud-compatible. The glaze means it doesn’t absorb flavour, so you can move between tobacco styles freely.
• Shot — a masta-style bowl with a smaller chamber, built for shorter and more concentrated sessions.

If you’re only buying one, the D-Phunnel covers the widest range of situations. If you already own a phunnel and want a second bowl for variety, the glazed D-Classic is the more useful addition.

Packing for a Dense Blend

Dark leaf behaves differently from lighter tobacco, and the bowls here are built with that in mind.

Pack loosely — dense blends expand and a tight pack chokes the airflow. Leave a few millimetres between the tobacco and the top edge so nothing touches the foil or the HMD directly. And give it longer to heat through than you would with a blonde leaf; two to three minutes before the first draw isn’t unusual.

Start with fewer coals than you think you need. It’s far easier to add one than to rescue a bowl that’s already overheated.

Mouth Tips and the Small Stuff

The Joystick personal mouth tips are a practical fix for group sessions. Each person gets their own contact point on the shared hose, and they’re small enough to carry in a pocket. Steel construction means they survive being thrown in a bag.

You’ll also find aluminium molasses catchers here. These sit between the stem and the vase and stop juice migrating down into the water — which keeps your water cleaner for longer and makes cleaning up afterwards a much shorter job.

Where Intro Comes In

Darkside’s Intro stem was built as a genuine starting point rather than a stripped-back afterthought.

Magnetic hose adapters mean the hose clips on instead of being screwed in. The ash plate is integrated into the body rather than being a separate part to lose. Assembly is simple enough that a first-time owner isn’t fighting it on day one. And stainless steel construction means it doesn’t feel like something you’ll be replacing next year.

The design language is deliberately minimal, so it sits fine in a modern room without announcing itself.
