Na Grani

Most heat management devices come with a lid. Na Grani built its reputation by leaving it off — and a whole style of smoking grew around that decision.

The Open-Top Approach

An HMD with no lid puts you in direct control. You can see the coals, move them with tongs, and adjust the heat by eye rather than by guesswork.

It’s the setup favoured for strong, dark blends, where you want real heat reaching the tobacco and want to react the moment it’s too much. A closed device evens things out for you. An open one hands you the controls. That asks a little more attention, and experienced smokers tend to prefer exactly that.

Steel or Duralumin?

Na Grani offers the same idea in two materials, and they behave noticeably differently.

• SS model — machined from a single piece of AISI 304 stainless steel. Heavy, extremely durable, dishwasher-safe, and it develops a golden tone after the first use that most owners end up liking.
• AL / Aircraft — made from D16T aviation duralumin. Around 70 grams, so far lighter on the bowl, with a gentler heat transfer that suits blonde leaf and lighter blends.

If you smoke dark leaf almost exclusively, the steel version is the natural pick — it takes punishing heat without complaint. If you switch between tobacco styles, the aluminium one is the better all-rounder. The Aircraft version came out of a collaboration with Aircraft Tobacco, which is where the aviation styling and the material choice both come from.

Coals, Airflow and Fit

Both models take two to three cubes of 26 mm natural charcoal comfortably, and four if you’re chasing a heavy session with a dense pack.

Raised sections inside the device lift the coals slightly off the surface. That keeps air moving underneath them and stops a single hot spot forming directly against the tobacco — which is the usual cause of a bowl going harsh forty minutes in.

The contact diameter is around 74 mm, inner diameter 56 mm, depth 24 mm. That fits the large majority of Turkish-style and phunnel bowls without needing an adapter.

Getting Your First Session Right

If you’re coming from foil, start conservatively. Two coals, not three. Let the device heat through for a couple of minutes before you take a first draw, and keep the coals toward the outer edge rather than dead centre.

Rotate them every ten to fifteen minutes. That single habit does more for a long session than any other adjustment.

Reading the Heat

Without a lid, you get visual feedback the whole time. Coals glowing bright orange all over means you’re running hot — move one off or split them further apart. Coals with grey ash across most of the surface means it’s time to tap them off or add one.

That feedback loop is the actual argument for an open HMD. You’re not waiting to taste a problem; you can see it coming.

A Small Thing Done Properly

Each device ships in a branded wooden box. It’s a nice touch, and it makes an unusually easy gift for someone who already owns everything else.

Foil vs. an HMD: What Actually Changes

If you’ve only ever used foil, the practical differences are worth spelling out.

Foil is cheap and disposable, but every bowl means tearing, smoothing and poking holes — and the hole pattern is different every time, so results vary. An HMD is a single reusable object with a fixed geometry, which means your setup behaves the same way tonight as it did last week. That consistency is the real benefit.

An HMD also makes moving coals safer, keeps ash off the tobacco, and stops the mid-session tears that ruin a foil bowl.

The trade-off is upfront cost and a short learning period while you work out how many coals your bowl wants. Most people take two or three sessions to settle on it.
