Hookah Squeeze
Before Hookah Squeeze, if you wanted flavour in your bowl you had two real options: tobacco or steam stones. The paste was a third route, and this Bavarian brand got there first.
What Steam Paste Is
It’s a thick, flavoured paste made without tobacco and without nicotine. It goes into your bowl, heats under charcoal, and produces vapour rather than smoke.
The format is the clever part. Because it comes in a tube, dosing is simple — no packing technique to learn, no fluffing, no careful sprinkling. You squeeze out what you need and you’re done. For anyone who has ever spent ten minutes building a bowl only to have it taste flat, that’s a meaningful change.
It also mixes into tobacco very readily, which is how a lot of people actually use it.
Made in Bavaria
Hookah Squeeze produces in Germany and describes itself as the original shisha paste — the first product of its kind on the market. The range has moved from cans to squeezable tubes over the years, which made dosing tidier and cut down on packaging.
The recipe has been revised more than once, with the current version described as creamier and more intense than the early cans. If you tried it years ago and weren’t convinced, it’s worth another look.
Three Ways to Use It
You don’t have to pick one approach and stick with it.
- On its own — fill a phunnel bowl with paste and run the session completely tobacco-free.
- Mixed in — knead a small amount through your usual tobacco to lift the flavour and thicken the vapour.
- Layered — a strip of paste under or over the tobacco. The sandwich method, where paste goes both below and above, is popular for a reason.
Squeeze the tube a few times before you open it. The paste separates slightly in storage and a quick knead brings it back together.
The Flavour Range
Fruit blends do most of the heavy lifting — green apple, mango, grapefruit, kiwi, pineapple — alongside Cooling, which delivers a mint-style effect and turns up in a huge number of mixes.
Cooling is the one worth having in the drawer permanently. A small amount added to almost any fruit flavour changes the whole character of the session, and it costs very little to experiment with.
Mixing Your Own Combinations
This is where paste gets interesting. Because it’s easy to portion, you can build combinations in a way that’s fiddly with loose tobacco.
Start simple: two fruits in a roughly even split, or one fruit with a small amount of Cooling. Note down what you used and what the ratio was, because the good combinations are frustratingly easy to forget. Small tubes make this cheap to explore.
Paste also works well as a way to rescue a tobacco you find slightly dull — a strip underneath will carry it further.
Bowl and Heat Notes
A phunnel bowl works best. The paste is dense and the raised spire keeps it where it should be rather than letting it slump.
Start with less heat than you’d use for tobacco and add a coal if the vapour comes through thin. Overheating paste is by far the most common mistake and it’s easy to avoid — the flavour tells you immediately when you’ve gone too far.
Storage and Shelf Life
Keep tubes closed and somewhere cool. Paste doesn’t dry out the way loose tobacco does, but heat will thin it and make dosing messier. A drawer is fine; a windowsill in summer is not.
Who It Suits
Three groups tend to get the most out of it: people who want to smoke without tobacco, people who want to stretch and lift a tobacco they already own, and people who simply find bowl-packing fiddly and want a shortcut that still tastes good.
If you’re in none of those camps, a single small tube is a cheap way to find out.
